  17. <p>    If there were any doubts about the overwhelming rejection of
  18. the Communist party by Polish voters earlier this month, they
  19. were firmly dispelled last week. By the end of the second round
  20. of sparsely attended balloting, the Solidarity trade-union
  21. movement had confirmed its victory by winning 99 seats in the
  22. 100-member Senate and all 161 opposition seats in the 460-seat
  23. Sejm, the lower house, where 299 places had been set aside in
  24. advance for the Communist alliance.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>    Although Communist party leader General Wojciech Jaruzelski
  27. has attempted to draw Solidarity into a coalition, the
  28. trade-union movement insists it will remain in opposition until
  29. completely free elections are held. Solidarity has agreed to
  30. cooperate on pressing matters such as economic reform, but
  31. seems unlikely to support Jaruzelski's candidacy for the newly
  32. created presidency. Solidarity is hoping that the Communist
  33. party will avoid a showdown on the presidency by nominating
  34. someone other than Jaruzelski. Said an aide to Lech Walesa:
  35. "There has to be someone they can put up who is acceptable to
  36. both sides."
